imply  vs.  infer

Imply infer

The sender of this unspoken message is the one who implies, while the receiver is the one who infers.

imply : 暗示；隐含

to subtly hint ar a hidden message that isn't part of the actual words spoken or written.

infer: 推断；猜想

to read into a message to understand the deeper meaning （make an assumption based on actions or the way things were said/written）

我们看一个发生在俩室友之间的故事：

Are you really wearing that?

Lily is implying that she doesn't like Jane's outfit.

Lily在暗示她不喜欢Jane的这身打扮

Jane could infer that Lily doesn't like her outfit.

Jane也能从Lily的言语用词中推断出她不喜欢自己的这身打扮。

换个角度，设想如果Lily是这样表达的:

I don't like your outfit. You should change

那她就没有imply这个行为了，她只是含糊其辞地把想法说了出来。

如果Lily真这么说了，那估计友谊的小船就说翻就翻咯。
